Looking for witnesses who saw an incident that happened today (3/9/10) at the intersection of Yale Avenue and Edgewood Avenue (corner of Edgewood park, Parks Recreation office, Edgewood elementary school)

Today (3/9/10) at about 1pm my friend and I were legally crossing the road after all lights were red and the crosswalks where lit. We had a double stroller and a single stroller holding 3 infants. During the redlight and us crossing a woman was driving up Yale Avenue towards Fountain at a very high rate of speed, missed me by a foot or two and ran a red light. Had I not been speedy in my crossing, me and the baby would have been plowed down.

I only caught a short glimpse of the woman and her car because she drove so fast. Her car was an economy sized car, charcoal grey, and I think she was blonde. There was a few cars at the light. If you remember this, please contact me at pcosinct at yahoo dot com. I'd like to file a formal complaint against this woman but don't have the necessary information. I am looking into seeing if there are cameras on that intersection as well. Hopefully it was caught on tape.

Help resolve this with a comment, image or video...

  • Roundabouts are to keep traffic moving through an intersection (or slowing mid-block traffic). Not the best in places where people are frequently trying to cross the street.

  • Has this intersection been considered for a roundabout?

  • We need patrol at this intersection big time! AGAIN I was crossing that same intersection - mind you its in front of the elementary school - and a delivery guy in a white unmarked nice truck ran the red light/pedestrian light as I was crossing the street with children! And guess what, all to do make the turn, do a U'y to make the delivery into the school!!!!! ARG! Im so angry and frustrated! Truck did this as I was in the middle of the street. And yes, you can believe I had some non-foul-language words for him, although if I had no kids with me, I would have gone off on his arse even more so!

  • KMF - at that intersection it IS a standard traffic light. It does not blink. I think you are thinking of the one down by YaleBowl. This intersection I am talking about is in front of the school, Edgewood Park and the Park Recreation office.

All lights were solid red at the time and the crosswalks were lit...she blew down the street and through the light without even slowing down. Id say she was probably going 45 easy.

  • That's a good idea...that coupled with the standard traffic light might be the answer. Too many people think that a blinking light, of any color either, yellow or red, means that their stopping or slowing down is an OPTION!

  • Red light camera are needed. There are too many drivers who think stopping at red lights is optional, including turning right on red where it's clearing marked no turn on red.

  • Why can't a traditional stop light be added? The wiring and lighting is already in place. Just replace the blinking light with a regular one.

  • I've seen people turn LEFT on red at that intersection.

The out of control driving culture in this city represents a failure of our government to take the issue seriously.

  • Mark I think you are correct. Just $10. Pat Dillon has said she was involved with even getting that.

  • Greg, I believe it is a flat $10 per ticket to the city, the rest to the state, not 90%/10%.

Has any progress been made on the investigation of this? If this had been a bullet grazing, the cops would be all over it. Does the lack of concern indicate that because it is a traffic assault, it doesn't matter?

Has anyone else contacted their state and local elected officials, and/or the Governor's office, on this matter?

If so, please post progress results here. We're all curious!

  • Thanks Greg. I do live in the area...a few blocks away from the incident. I called Traffic and they told me about the white cam thingies being only for what you said. Just found out a moment ago. My only other hope is that the school has a camera on their playground and if angled right will be in direct line of the intersection. I know IF they do have a camera, it will be a lot to ask of them, but hoping they will accommodate me. Long shot I know. They probably don't even have a camera but its worth a shot.

I am angry because this was either intentional or she was completely oblivious to what was happening.

  • BTW, moving violation $ is divided 90% to the state and 10% to the munis per current state law.

  • I may be your elected official if you live in Ward 25. I will continue to ask for increases in traffic enforcement . A new police chief was introduced yesterday. I will share this incident with our district manager, Lt. Tchakarides and will let him know that more folks are asking for even more enforcement. He did report at last month's CMT meeting that his district increased motor vehicle citations by 600% from the previous month. Also, there are efforts continuing at the State level (which has to come before the municipalities can even consider legislation) for red light enforcement cams. So if you are for this type of enforcement, please help. Also, the cylindrical white cams at the newly refurbished intersections are sensors that replace the ingound loops. However some city intersections do have cameras that record for about 24hrs. These are the sphere-like ones mounted on a shot curved pole. I don't believe there is one at Edgewood & Yale. If folks do see one of those cams at an intersection and then see an incident, we can ask TT&P and/or PD to review the recordings.

  • Did not see your near-accident; sorry and glad you scooted out of the way. On a related note, all 4-way lights in the city should have a several-second delay added so that briefly, all directions are red (this is in addition to four-way-red walk signals, as this SCF poster was walking on). While this won't prevent red-light running, it will help cut down on car/car accidents resulting from it. Unfortunately, pedestrians, as always, must be extra vigilant.

  • Did this happen today, Wednesday March 10, or yesterday, Tuesday March 9? Might help to clarify this if you are looking for witnesses. Glad you were all OK.
